Job Summary
Facilitates a safe school environment and works with at-risk and violent youth by performing the following duties.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
- Acts as liaison between the police department and the school, especially in relationship to the Safe Schools Act.
- Maintains confidentiality of information gained through the performance and locations of the position.
- To be a visible, active law enforcement figure on campus dealing with law enforcement matters and school code violations originating on each campus.
- Work Closely with building and district administration
- To provide classroom resource for law education using approved materials.
- Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, carrying forbidden articles and investigates and/or refers to administration persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
- To be a resource for students this will enable them to be associated with law enforcement figure and role model in the student’s environment.
- To be a resource for teachers, parents and student in a conference or individual basis dealing with problems or questions in the area of violence, bulling or substance abuse.
- Observers departing students to guard against violence and illegal activity
- Conducts follow-up visits with students during summer and/or after school
- Regulates vehicle and pedestrian traffic at school property to maintain orderly flow.
- Develops and maintains cooperative communications with students and parents
- Develops and maintains two-way supportive communication with school staff
- Attends Home High School sporting events and other highly attended school events where they will provide safety and security by patrolling the event, for illegal/violent activity.
- Enforce criminal law and protect students, staff and public at large against criminal activity. The SRO shall follow the policies and procedures of the commissioning agency.
- Report or share with school administrator’s persons or conditions that pertain to campus safety.
- Wear full dress uniform approved by commissioning agency.
- Successfully complete range qualifications of the commissioning agency.
- The SRO will not function as a disciplinarian or give legal advice to building and district administration
Chain of Command
The SRO will be an employee of the Potosi R-III School district and will follow all Policy and Procedures of the Potosi R-III School district. The SRO will report to the Potosi R-III Superintendent or designee.
The SRO will follow and all policy and procedures of the commissioning agencies.
Other Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designate for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Ability)
Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years of Law Enforcement Experience. Completion of state certified law-enforcement academy and possess a Class A Peace Officer Certification and commission in accordance with RMSO 590, POST Certification. The SRO must successfully maintain all required training and continuing education in accordance with Missouri POST. Must pass and intensive criminal background investigation, possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Missouri operator’s license. Requires the carry of and proficient use of firearms with the ability to successfully complete firearms range qualification as set by the commissioning agencies. Candidates cannot have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime per 18 U.S.C. 992(g)(8)(9). Ability to successfully complete the Basic and Advance SRO training courses held by NASRO.
Preferred: Associates or higher in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement or related field. Three or more years of Law Enforcement experience and previous experience in Criminal Investigations or School Resource Officer, preferred.
Residency Requirement
SRO must be able to respond in uniform to any incident on campus within 30 minutes
Other Skills and Abilities:
Communication: Ability to effectively present information and respond clearly to inquiries from administrator, staff, students, parents/guardians and the general public. Ability to write reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of this job. Ability to interface effectively with other departments and school personnel and business contacts outside the district.
Reasoning: Ability to solve practical problem and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.
Computer: Ability to learn and utilize Windows based computers and a variety of other devices such as Chrome Books and smartphones. Ability to learn and utilize various software programs and applications such as but not limited to Word, Excel, Firefox, Gmail and department report writing software.
Other: Ability to accurately perform assigned tasks satisfactorily. Ability to perform duties in full compliance with District requirements and Board Policy. Ability to promote harmonious working relationships with staff and students. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills.
Work Environment: Noise level in this environment is quite to moderate. Duties are primarily indoors, but are occasionally outdoors. In-District and out of town travel required as necessary for training and/or to carry out duties and responsibilities. May assist distraught and/or angry persons. Experience constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines.
Physical Requirement: While performing this job, individual is regularly required to sit, stand, walk , talk, hear, see, reach with hands/arm, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, grasp and use repetitive motions. Individual may also frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material or computer/device screens and distance vision such as reading a blackboard, whiteboard or projector screen. |
